History & Current Events

Wars, attacks, elections, pandemics, moments the news never forgot. History is usually told from above — here it's told by the people who were standing in it.

What has stayed with you from your parent’s or grandparent’s memories of Pearl Harbor?

Some stories become part of a family long after the day itself. Think back to the first time you heard theirs—where they were that morning, how young they were, or a detail they returned to again and again. A photograph, letter, or medal may still hold part of that story. Their words might mean something different to you now than when you first heard them. Share what they told you, what that day meant in their life, or how their story has stayed with you. Preserve their memory in their words or yours, and share only what feels right to you.

History & Current Events question

Which part of the Afghanistan War is your story?

The invasion, in the fall of 2001. A deployment — or the wait for someone to come home. The night bin Laden was found, in 2011. The final, chaotic days of withdrawal, in August 2021. Or something in the twenty years between. Whatever chapter is yours, we want to hear it — either a significant moment or your entire war story.

America 250 · 1776–2026

How did your family first come to America, and what did they bring with them?

As America marks 250 years, the country’s history is held in millions of individual journeys—fleeing hardship or war, following work or family, seeking freedom, or stepping into the unknown. Some stories happened two centuries ago and were passed down at kitchen tables; others began just a few years or months ago. For each entry, tell the story of one family or one branch of your family—who made the journey, where they came from, what they left behind, the first place they called home, or the traditions that survived the crossing. Have more than one family line or journey to share? Feel free to add multiple entries, giving each story its own space. Every journey is honored here, in whatever words feel safe and true to you. You are welcome to share anonymously. Indigenous families are welcome to share stories of roots, continuity, and belonging without a migration story.
